LPPM USU Launches Assisted Village Activities in Bagan Kuala Tanjung Beringin

TANJUNGBERINGIN (Waspada): Lecturers from the Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Psychology, and Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, USU Mangrove Science and Technology Center (PUI) carried out the launching of community service (PKM), through the USU Non PNBP Assisted Village scheme in 2023 to the people of Bagan Kuala Village, Tanjung Beringin District, Serdangbedagai Regency, recently.

This PKM activity was chaired by Prof. Mohammad Basyuni, S.Hut, M.Si, Ph.D (FHut/PUI Mangrove) with coordinators Ameilia Zuliyanti Siregar, S.Si, M.Sc, Ph.D (FP), Dr. Ir. Yunasfi, M.Si (FHut/PUI Mangrove), and Vivi Gusrini Rahmadani Pohan, S.Psi, MA, Ph.D (F Psychology). This Desa Binaan service activity is supported by PUI Mangrove, IKA USU, KNTI, and BRIN.

 

 

 

During the launching of the Assisted Village recently, it was attended by the Secretary of LPPM USU, Dr. Meutia Nauly S.Psi, M.Si, Psychologist who opened the event and signed the PKS with the Bagan Kuala Village Head, Safrizal. Service partner, Zulham Hasibuan. Tanjung Beringin Sub-district Muspika, Police Chief, R Sihombing, and Danramil, Kapt. Muzakir Walad.

 

 

 

The Head of Tanjung Beringin Sub-district, Elmiati SIP, and Bagan Kuala Village Head, Safrizal, highly appreciated this activity and supported the achievement of development in Bagan Kuala Village.

 

 

 

Prof. Mohammad Basyuni, S.Hut, M.Si, Ph.D said that the activities consisted of increasing community income through honey bee cultivation on mangrove plants carried out from June to August 2023. Then mangrove rehabilitation activities through mangrove nurseries and planting in degraded locations.

 

 

 

According to him, the idea for this activity emerged when the Government of Indonesia identified and secured funds aimed at restoring 600,000 hectares of mangrove areas damaged in 2004 in 9 provinces, including North Sumatra Province. The destruction of mangrove forests had a negative impact on the people of Bagan Kuala Village, including abrasion and seawater intrusion, resulting in a reduction in catchable fish.

 

 

 

Education and Strengthening of Productive Healthy Villages 

 

 

 

Mohammad Basyuni said, based on the results of the initial survey, the condition of the mangrove ecosystem at the location has been degraded so that through restoration activities as a community empowerment model, it is expected to be a long-term solution to mitigate climate change and reduce abrasion.

 

 

 

In addition, this activity is also a stimulus to increase community income through honey bees and other productive activities and the quality of life of the community with the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

 

 

"The service team has also provided 8 Trigona honey bee setups as basic capital for empowering honey bees and increasing community income," said Mohammad Basyuni.

 

 

 

He said, the community group had also built a nursery bed measuring 15 x 1 meter which contained approximately 5000 polybag plastic bags measuring 15 x 20 cm, where each bag contained one propagule. Planting with partners, service teams and students will be carried out in September 2023.( m22 )
