MEDAN, In order to implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, one of which is the Dharma of Community Service, lecturers of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and lecturers of the Faculty of Engineering along with students carried out community service in Tandam Hilir Dua Village, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra.
This activity raised the theme "Application of Solar Energy-Based Pest Control Tools in Improving the Quality of Rice Plants to Reduce Farmer Losses."
Risky, one of those who joined the Tegal Sari Farmer group, said that this theme is important because being a rice farmer is quite tiring.
"Especially during the period of caring for rice plants until the rice harvest because of several obstacles that farmers often face during that period, he said.
Risky added that in general farmers will check the condition of the rice every day for three months. "If the rice leaves are found damaged (holes), then it is concluded that it could have happened because they were bitten by pests such as javelina, rats, caterpillars, and the like," he said.
Risky explained, to overcome this, the community service team provided a solution by providing appropriate technology, namely a solar-based pest control tool that can be used to eradicate pests and make it easier for farmers to care for rice plants.
"It can be seen in the demonstration picture of the tool placed in the middle of the rice field where lecturers and students are explaining the principle of using the tool," explained Risky
On that occasion, the community service team handed over a solar-based pest control tool that was immediately installed in the middle of the farmer's rice field.
