Binjai - Lecturers from the University of North Sumatra (USU) carried out community service to improve Indonesian language literacy for MAN Binjai students. The activity, chaired by Prof. Dr. Drs. Mulyadi, M.Hum., with members Prof. Dr. Ikhwanuddin Nasution, M.Si., Dr. Dardanila, M.Hum., and Dr. Dwi Widayati, M.Hum., was intended to avoid hate speech and bullying in schools.

Prof. Mulyadi explained that currently the basic function of language, namely as a means of conveying messages to establish social interaction, is somewhat neglected. Language is actually used as an instrument to express negative emotions, such as hatred. Language is no longer a 'message', but has changed into 'sentiment'.

"This is represented in the form of hate speech and bullying that often occurs on social media, especially among students. Violations of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE) occur everywhere. On that basis, learning Indonesian can be used as a forum for developing literacy in schools," said Prof. Mulyadi.

This community service activity (PKM) needs to be carried out as a provision and literacy knowledge for students, he added. The purpose of this community service activity is to increase knowledge and skills about the form of hate speech and bullying texts in Indonesian language literacy for students and also knowledge about the right procedures or strategies to avoid hate speech and verbal bullying by others.

"The methods applied in journalistic reporting training are (1) the introduction activity method and (2) the training activity method. In this training, there are two methods applied, namely practice and simulation. For the implementation of Indonesian language literacy training activities, a visit was made to MAN Binjai," he explained.

Prof. Mulyadi said that the results of the community service showed that students had significantly improved their Indonesian language literacy to avoid hate speech and bullying in order to avoid violations of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE) from happening everywhere.

"This improvement illustrates the effectiveness of the program or intervention implemented, indicating that participants experienced substantial progress in understanding or skills as measured by the pre-test and post-test," he said.
