DELISERDANG | Lecturers from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (USU) conducted a Training on Processing Durian Fruit Peels into Natural Mosquito Repellent Lotion for the Prevention of Dengue Fever in Bandar Setia Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deliserdang Regency, North Sumatra.

The training organized by the USU Community Service Institute lasted for two days, namely August 24-25, 2024.

Acting as the Head of the Community Service Implementation Team, Prof. Dr. Miswar Budi Mulya, S.Si, M.Si accompanied by Dr. T. Alief Aththorick, S.Si, M.Si and Mimmy Sari Syah Putri, S.Si, M.Si and assisted by students from the Biology Undergraduate Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, USU.

This community service activity includes providing technical training and socialization in which there are direct practical activities by the community.

On the sidelines of the event, Prof. Dr. Miswar Budi Mulya, S.Si, M.Si said, training on processing durian fruit skin into anti-mosquito lotion is one alternative that can be used by the community in processing durian fruit waste.

This is because durian fruit skin contains essential oils, flavonoids, saponins, cellulose elements, lignin, and starch content.

The content in durian skin has a very pungent odor and is not liked by mosquitoes because the effect of the content can affect the nerves of mosquitoes and the resulting effect is that mosquitoes become unstable and eventually die.

The problem often faced by the community is the lack of skills and understanding about processing durian fruit skin waste into anti-mosquito lotion as a prevention of dengue fever (DBD) considering the current rainy season.

"For that, we are carrying out community service in the village as an effort to create independence and increase community skills in processing durian fruit skin into anti-mosquito lotion," he said.

The activity was attended by all members of the surrounding community who looked very enthusiastic when listening to the explanation from the implementing team and continued with the practice of making anti-mosquito lotion from durian fruit skin.

In the USU Community Service Activity Implementation Team, students are also involved who are tasked with accompanying participants until the community truly understands, so that the goals or outputs of this activity are expected to be continued by the community independently and sustainably.
