Medan. The Community Service Institute (LPM) of the University of North Sumatra (USU) provided a coffee fruit skin peeling machine (pulper) and a dry coffee horn skin peeler (huller) to farmers in Boangmanalu Village, Salak District, Pakpak Bharat, North Sumatra.
The provision of the two machines is to make it easier for farmers to peel coffee skin by utilizing technology. The handover of the assistance is a non-PNBP community service program in 2024, the Economic and Social Service Scheme.
The service will take place from May to November 2024. Meanwhile, the team consists of Karina Nola Sinamo S TP MSi (chairperson). Karina is a Lecturer in the Food Technology Study Program. While the members are Putri Chandra Ayu S TP M Si (Lecturer in the Agricultural Engineering and Biosystems Study Program).
Then Ir Sentosa Ginting MP and Edy Syahputra Harahap S TP M Si who are Lecturers in the Food Technology Study Program. Also on the team were 3 students from the Food Technology Study Program, namely Maychel Panjaitan, Ruth Melisa and Gika Emmanuella.
"The two machines are to help farmers. So far, the process of peeling coffee fruit skin has been carried out traditionally, namely using manual equipment driven by humans. This requires a lot of energy and a long time," said Karina in her written statement Tuesday (8/20/2024)
In addition, continued Karina, the manual peeling tool produces a fairly large percentage of unpeeled fruit, the skin is still attached to the coffee beans and the beans are broken with a relatively high percentage.
"The community service team provided 2 post-harvest coffee machines, namely a coffee fruit skin peeling machine called a pulper and a dry coffee horn skin peeling machine called a huller. The assistance was received by Seraya Banurea as a representative of the farmers," explained Karina.
In addition, farmers are also trained to use both machines until they are skilled. It is hoped that with these two tools, coffee skin peeling can produce coffee beans effectively and efficiently. The quality and quantity also increase.
Karina explained that both machines can produce coffee fruit peeling results faster because the pulper machine has a capacity of 160-200 kg/hour. While the huller machine capacity is 100-250 kg/hour.
"Hopefully this machine assistance can make it easier for farmers in post-harvest activities and can improve their economy," said Karina.
