MEDAN, University of North Sumatra (USU) has launched a new initiative aimed at improving the professionalism of tour guides in Bukit Lawang through the program “Strengthening Healthy and Safe Orientation for Bukit Lawang Tour Guides”.
This program is led by Dr. Rusmalawaty, M.Kes., as Chair, with Eko Yudhistira, SH.MKn, and Dr. Isyatun Mardhiyah Syahri SKM, M.Kes as members.
Bukit Lawang, located in Bahorok District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, is a leading tourist destination famous for its natural beauty and observation of Sumatran orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park.
However, challenges in maintaining the health and safety of tourists are still important issues. Some of the challenges identified include the lack of understanding of tour guides regarding health and safety protocols and the need for adequate equipment.
“This program aims to improve the quality of tour guides in Bukit Lawang with three main targets. First, we want to deepen the knowledge and skills of tour guides through comprehensive training. Second, we will provide the necessary equipment to ensure the safety and comfort of tourists. Finally, we are trying to get certification for tour guides, so that they can meet professional standards and provide better and more reliable services," said Dr. Rusmalawaty, M.Kes., as the Head of the Proposing Team to the media through a written statement on Wednesday (7/8).
She said, this program will be implemented through a systematic approach consisting of several important stages.
First, a Needs Analysis is carried out by holding a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to evaluate training needs and the preparation of relevant modules.
Next, the Training Module Creation stage will be carried out by compiling special materials on health and safety designed for tour guides. The next stage is Equipment Procurement, where the necessary aids will be provided according to the identified needs.
After that, Training will be carried out which includes direct and practical sessions to improve tour guide skills effectively. Finally, the results of all activities will be published through various channels such as print, online, and video media, as well as the preparation of scientific journals to document and share the knowledge gained.
With the implementation of this program, it is hoped that tour guides in Bukit Lawang will acquire the skills and knowledge needed to improve their professionalism. This is expected to contribute to increasing the number of tourists and their satisfaction, as well as reducing the risk of accidents or unpleasant incidents.
"We believe that with the right training and provision of tools, tour guides in Bukit Lawang will be better prepared to maintain the health and safety of tourists, which in turn will improve the quality of tourism in this area," he said again.
This program is part of USU's efforts to support human resource development and improve the quality of tourism in North Sumatra, with the hope of providing significant benefits to local communities and increasing the appeal of Bukit Lawang as a safe and enjoyable tourist destination.
