TOBA | USU Professors Prof. Dr. Erika Revida, MS and Prof. Dr. Badaruddin, MSi Conduct Community Service Activities Titled “Implementation of Local Wisdom-Based Good Tourism Governance to Increase Community Income” at the Simanindo Tourism Village, Samosir Regency, North Sumatra, July 14–15, 2024

USU Professor Prof. Dr. Erika Revida explained that local wisdom-based good tourism governance refers to tourism management that upholds the principles of participation, accountability, and evaluation grounded in the cultural values that flourish within the local village community, such as mutual trust, support, and cooperation (gotong royong).

“This is based on previous surveys which show that most tourism destinations are still not well managed, making the tourism sector stagnant,” said the professor.

Furthermore, Prof. Erika explained that the tourism sector has extensive positive impacts on the community, the region, and the nation, including increasing incomes at the community, regional, and village levels, preventing urbanization, and fostering greater appreciation of local culture and wisdom.

“Therefore, managing villages with good tourism governance needs to continuously be pursued through community service programs such as these. It is essential to encourage participation from the community and all stakeholders, ensuring accountability and ongoing evaluation, accompanied by mutual trust, support, and a spirit of cooperation,” she emphasized.

In addition, the community service team led by Prof. Erika encouraged residents to consistently promote Simanindo Tourism Village through online media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and others, since almost everyone today checks social media.

“With these cost-effective promotions, Simanindo Tourism Village will become more widely known, attracting more tourists to visit, which in turn will have a positive impact on community and village income,” Prof. Erika added.

Overall, Prof. Erika reported that the community service program received a positive response from the village government, represented by the village secretary, and from the residents of Simanindo Tourism Village, who hoped that such activities would continue in the future.

“Hopefully, this activity will further strengthen the community and inspire them to keep developing tourism in Simanindo Tourism Village, Samosir, North Sumatra,” she concluded.

At the end of the event, the service team took a group photo and distributed stickers with the tagline “I am tourist-friendly” to remind all residents of Simanindo Tourism Village, Samosir, to always be welcoming to visitors.
