MEDAN: Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Lecturer Team carried out community service activities through the Community Partnership Empowerment (PKM) program by providing assistance in the form of PE Goat parent stock and grass chopping machines to improve feeding patterns for the Semangat Jaya Farmer Group (Koptan) in Huta VI, Bandar Tinggi Village, Bandar Masilam District, Simalungun Regency. This Community Service Activity was funded by the 2024 DRTPM of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research and Technology.

The community service activities were carried out in stages starting in April 2024 in the form of field surveys to see partner problems and find the right solutions to overcome these problems. The procurement of PE Goat parent stock began with the determination of livestock specifications jointly between the community service team, partners, and the surrounding community who have PE goat livestock businesses that produce milk.

The agreed livestock specifications were continued with the realization of the procurement of goat parent stock, to reduce transportation costs, priority was given to parents from the areas closest to partners in Simalungun Regency.

The procurement of PE goat broodstock was carried out in the period from July to mid-August 2024. At the same time, a grass chopper machine was also made which could later support the productivity of providing feed for PE goats that produce milk which can improve the standard of living of farmer group members.
The service team consisting of Chair Ir. Suprianto ST, MT, MT, PhD, and members Dr. Dra. Ir. Chairani Hanum MS from the Agrotechnology study program, Fadly Ahmad Kurniawan Nasution ST, MT from the USU Mechanical Engineering Department, visited a partner's place in Bandar Tinggi Village to test the application of a chopper machine to provide green feed for PE goats sourced from cassava trees.
The activity also involved three students from the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, as an implementation of the MBKM curriculum. The three students are Andrela Ester Margaretha, Khalbi Ayub, and Hermawan from the 2021 batch.
In addition, members of Koptan Semangat Jaya were also actively involved in the activity, helping to provide raw materials for green feed and practicing silage making directly. The provision of concentrate to improve the health and productivity of PE Goat milk was also conveyed to farmers during the visit of the PKM-USU team.
On that occasion, Ramlan Chaniago, a member of Koptan Semangat Jaya, was very grateful for the assistance of quality PE Goat breeders that produce milk and a chopper machine that greatly helps increase income to meet daily needs.
"The existence of this chopper machine is very helpful in preparing animal feed, so that not much of the cassava stems and leaves are wasted," he said.
Based on the activity plan that has been prepared, evaluation and monitoring of the implementation of the correct feeding pattern for PE goats that produce milk will continue to be carried out by the PKM-USU team until December 2024.
