International Community Service by FIB USU in Bangkok, Thailand Strengthens Muslim Traders
Bangkok - The International Community Service Team from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU), in collaboration with The Office of Islamic Committee of Bangkok Metropolis, Thammasat University Thailand, and Pasar Kamu, organized an international service themed "The Strengthening of Muslim Small Scale Traders in Bangkok, Thailand and Pasar Kamu Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, Indonesia" aimed at Muslim traders in Bangkok.
The international community service activities included training, discussions, and exchanges of experiences in selling and marketing local (culinary) products between Muslim traders in Bangkok and Pasar Kamu to enhance economic growth and community welfare.
The Head of the FIB USU International Community Service Team, Prof. Budi Agustono, explained that the international service activity took place at the meeting room of The Office of Islamic Committee of Bangkok Metropolis. The event was attended by thirty local female traders who produce local culinary items and modern packaged culinary products. The atmosphere was one of open training, discussion, and idea exchange, where participants shared their experiences in local economic activities and marketing networks, from selling in souvenir shops to utilizing online applications to market their products.
"The International Community Service by FIB USU provided training materials and experiences on organizing traditional culinary traders from the past and the management system of Pasar Kamu, which is held every Sunday in Kampung Denai Lama, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, as presented by Dedi Sofyan, the founder and manager of Pasar Kamu," he stated.
Prof. Budi explained that the efforts to preserve and maintain traditional culinary dishes from the past, cooked and packaged in a non-traditional manner, which generate economic income for the community, were intriguing experiences for Muslim traders in Bangkok.
The International Community Service by FIB USU concluded with an agreement for Muslim traders in Bangkok to visit Pasar Kamu in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, as part of an exchange visit to observe the management of preservation and promotion of traditional culinary heritage that rapidly stimulates the local economy.
After the community service activities, on July 4-5, 2024, the FIB USU International Community Service Team was taken to see locations where local culinary products are made and packaged in a modern and contemporary style, requiring significant capital investment in Bangkok. During the visit, they were also shown and invited to taste dates cultivated by Bangkok's Muslim traders on their agricultural land.
The International Community Service by FIB USU was held at The Office of Islamic Committee of Bangkok Metropolis in Bangkok.
The event was attended by the Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at Thammasat University, the President of the Office of Muslim Committee of Bangkok Metropolis, Muslim traders, and leaders of Bangkok's Muslim traders' organization.
