MEDAN, The Community Service Institute (LPPM) of the University of North Sumatra held an ecoprint workshop (a printing technique that uses natural or environmentally friendly materials to create beautiful and valuable works of art) and processing mangrove plants for natural dyes, to support ecotourism in Bagan Kuala Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency on Saturday (27/7).
The activity was organized by a team of experts from various disciplines led by Dr. Iwan Risnasari, S.Hut, M.Si as the Activity Coordinator.
Where ecoprinting is a printing technique on fabric using natural materials that are not only environmentally friendly but also provide a unique artistic touch to textile products.
The activity was also supported by a number of implementing members consisting of Prof. Dr. Etti Sartina Siregar, S.Si, M.Si, Dr. Deni Elfiati, SP, MP, Dr. Erni Jumilawaty, M.Si, Dr. Bejo Slamet, S.Hut, M.Si, Dr. Ir. Yunasfi, MS, and Ahmad Baiquni Rangkuti, S.Hut, M.Si.
This service is part of a series of Village Service activities from the Community Service Institute (LPPM) of the University of North Sumatra, chaired by Prof. Mohammad Basyuni, S.Hut, M.Si., Ph.D.
According to Dr. Iwan Risnasari, S.Hut, M.Si as the activity coordinator, this workshop aims to provide knowledge and skills to the local community regarding ecoprinting techniques, as well as processing mangrove plants as natural dyes.
During the activity in his speech, Dr. Iwan Risnasari said that this activity is a significant initial step to promote the ecotourism potential of Bagan Kuala Village.
"We hope that through this workshop, the local community can utilize the abundant mangrove plants in this area to produce products with high economic value while supporting environmental conservation," he said.
It was explained that this event includes theory and practice sessions. Participants consisted of housewives, some of whom had sewing skills, who received direct training on how to process mangrove plants to make natural dyes, as well as ecoprinting techniques on fabrics.
Participants were also given the opportunity to discuss directly with experts about the potential for product development that could be produced.
Meanwhile, the resource person said that processing mangrove plants into natural dyes not only helps in the development of local products but also plays an important role in maintaining environmental sustainability. Mangrove plants, which are often overlooked, can be a very valuable resource if managed properly.
This event received a positive response from participants and the surrounding community. Many of them were enthusiastic about applying the knowledge gained in their daily activities.
In addition, this workshop is also expected to strengthen community awareness and support for the preservation of the mangrove ecosystem, which is an important part of their environment.
At the end of the event, the Community Service Team from the USU Mangrove Science and Technology Center (PUI) and the USU Community Service Institute (LPPM) donated a number of equipment and materials to be used as training materials for participants at home. With this workshop, it is hoped that Bagan Kuala Village can become a successful example in developing ecotourism based on local wisdom and environmental conservation through sustainable innovation.
