Medan Sports Teachers Increase Capacity in Physical Literacy
MEDAN, – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) recently held an international community service event themed “Improving the Capacity of Sports Teachers in Integrating Physical Literacy in Physical Education, Sports and Health”.
The event, which lasted for two days on 7-8 September 2024, was attended by sports teachers throughout Medan City. This community service was held in collaboration between the USU Faculty of Medicine and Sportal Corporate Private Limited, Indira Nagar Lucknow – India, chaired by Dr. dr. Yetty Machrina, M.Kes, AIFO-K, Sp.KKLP with the PKM team Prof. Dr. dr. Dina Keumala Sari, M.Gz, Sp.GK dr. Sunna Vyatra Hutagalung, MS, Ph.D and Dr. T. Henny Febriana Harumy, S.Kom, M.Kom.
Prof. Dr. Aldy Safruddin Rambe, Sp.S(K), Dean of the USU Faculty of Medicine officially opened the event on the first day. Then continued with a seminar activity in the MKK lecture room on the 1st floor of the USU Faculty of Medicine, presenting three main speakers. Dr. dr. Yetty Machrina, M.Kes, AIFO-K, Sp.KKLP from the USU Faculty of Medicine, an expert in the field of sports physiology, delivered material on "Health Literacy", emphasizing the importance of physical activity during growth to improve health.
Next, Dr. Henny Harumi from the USU Faculty of Computer Science discussed the topic "Technology and Physical Literacy", reviewing the use of technology in physical literacy. International speaker, Dr. Gaurav Pant from Sportal Corporate Pvt. Ltd, shared the best experiences from Sportal Corporate in implementing physical literacy in schools in India.
The second day of the event was filled with interactive sessions with Dr. Gaurav Pant. Participants were involved in discussions on curriculum creation, preparation of lesson plans and self-reflection related to physical literacy. Practical activities in the field were also held, including group physical activities and creative brainstorming sessions to create interesting games using used newspapers.
"This event provides new insights for us sports teachers in integrating physical literacy into the curriculum," said one participant.
"Field practice and sharing sessions are very useful for developing our teaching methods," he added.
The Dean of the USU Faculty of Medicine, stated that this event is part of the university's commitment to improving the quality of physical education in schools.
"We hope that teachers can apply this new knowledge and skills to form a healthier and more active generation," he added.
This event marks an important step in efforts to improve the quality of physical education in the city of Medan, with the hope that it can have a positive impact on the health and fitness of students in the future, as expressed by Dr. Yetty Machrina.
