Medan - Lecturers from the University of North Sumatra (USU) carried out community service to optimize the reproductive health of the community at the Kampung Baru Health Center, Medan. The activities initiated by lecturers from the Faculty of Nursing (FKep) USU included free counseling and examinations for the surrounding community.

"Handling health problems in the community, especially reproductive health, is a priority of the government program and is one of the indicators of success in overcoming public health problems," said the Head of the Community Service Team, Dr. Siti Saidah Nasution, S.Kp., M.Kep. Sp.Mat.

She explained that the community service activities carried out by lecturers from USU, especially lecturers from the Faculty of Nursing in collaboration with the USU Community Service Institute, are part of handling health problems for pregnant women.

"This activity will help the government in accelerating the handling of the problem of high maternal and infant morbidity/mortality. This activity also focuses on the success of the global action plan or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the achievements in No. 2 and 3, namely eliminating hunger, achieving food security and good nutrition, ensuring a healthy life and improving the welfare of all people of all ages," said Dr. Siti Saidah Nasution.

This community service itself was carried out by a team of lecturers from the USU Faculty of Nursing, Department of Maternity and Child Nursing, together with students and health workers from the Kampung Baru Medan Health Center and assisted by health cadres, Posyandu Officers, village officials and neighborhood heads.

"We carry out various activities such as maternal and infant health checks, health education related to the care of pregnant women and the implementation of health checks by carrying out pregnancy checks through regular antenatal care (ANC). Health checks for pregnant women can now also be done online using various applications, such as Teman Bumil, Sahabat Ibu Hamil, and others," said Dr. Siti Saidah Nasution.

The use of the application, she added, can be done via an Android cellphone, making it easier for mothers to get services and information related to health and pregnancy without visiting health workers. The existence of services in educating pregnant women and online checks is expected to be a solution in accelerating early detection of high-risk pregnancy problems and getting immediate services for mothers.

"Community service activities are carried out by directly involving the community by empowering the Posyandu for mothers and babies in each environment in the Kampung Baru Health Center work area. Providing counseling not only to pregnant women, but also to the entire accompanying family such as husbands, mothers and in-laws. This activity is expected to improve the reproductive health of the community, especially the health of pregnant women and increase the role of the family in caring for mothers and babies," he concluded.
