BINJAI, Lecturers from the Faculty of Public Health, University of North Sumatra (USU) held a community service activity at Tavip Market, Binjai City. This activity took the theme "Empowerment of Traders and Managers of Tavip Market, Binjai City in Market Sanitation Management and Fly Control and the Formation of a Healthy Market Care Community (KOMPASS)".
"This activity will take place on July 20, 2024, with the aim of educating and increasing awareness and understanding of traders about the importance of healthy markets, so that traders and managers can manage to create healthy markets," said the Head of the Community Service Team, Dr. Ir Evi Naria, M.Kes in a press release received by Sumut Pos, Monday (5/8/2024).
According to Evi Naria, the target of this community empowerment activity is 25 traders at Tavip Market who have different types of merchandise, such as fish, meat, vegetables, and spices or seasonings. In this activity, Evi Naria was accompanied by fellow lecturers from the USU Faculty of Public Health, namely Dr. dr. Taufik Ashar, MKM., Dr. Fikarwin Zuska M Anthropologist as members.
In addition, this team also involved a number of USU Faculty of Public Health students, namely Novita Olivia, Raihana Atika, and Ardin Siagian. This activity was also supported by funding from Non-PNBP LPPM USU for the 2024 Fiscal Year.
In this activity, said Evi Naria, they provided education and raised awareness among traders about the importance of good market sanitation for the comfort of traders and consumers. This education was delivered by Dr. dr. Taufik Ashar, MKM to traders.
In his presentation, Taufik Ashar conveyed the importance of sanitation to support comfortable activities in the market and to be part of a healthy market. The indicators of a healthy market consist of market sanitation, the role of traders, the role of visitors, and the role of market managers.
"The benefits of a healthy market are to realize a clean, safe, comfortable and healthy market through the independence of the market community, increasing food quality, and a healthier work environment," he said.
Taufik also conveyed various conditions in the Tavip Binjai market, such as waste management, availability of clean water, drainage in the market, and market toilets.
Education was continued by Dr. Fikarwin Zuska M Anthropologist who invited participants to convey their aspirations in realizing a healthy market. This activity also succeeded in initiating the formation of the Healthy Market Care Community (Kompass) as a form of empowerment of traders in managing market sanitation to create a cleaner, more comfortable, and healthier market in the Tavip Binjai Market.
Furthermore, the Kompass vest was pinned to 12 people representing traders, and managers, as well as the community service team and as a sign of the formation of this community. "By inaugurating the members of the Healthy Market Care Community (Kompass), it is hoped that it can provide motivation and enthusiasm to community members in carrying out their roles as changemakers to the Tavip Binjai market towards a healthy market," hoped Evi Naria.
Present on that occasion, the Head of the Manpower, Industry and Trade Office of Binjai City, Drs. Hamdani Hasibuan. According to Hamdani, this activity is in line with the mandate of the Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 34 of 2005 concerning the implementation of healthy cities and districts, including the existence of healthy markets. "I hope that with the initiation of the formation of the Healthy Market Community, it can advance and make Tavip Market a healthier market," said Hamdani Hasibuan.
This community empowerment activity received a positive response from traders at the Tavip Binjai market. "My hope is that Kompass will continue, and the Tavip Binjai market will be an example for other markets," said a market trader.
Ardin Hermansyah Siagian explained that Kompass was formed with the hope that the community could bring change to the environment around the Tavip Binjai Market. "It is hoped that with the Kompass team, it can bring seeds of change to traders here so that they are more aware of the importance of cleanliness and the importance of managing market sanitation at Tavip Market," he said.
