Self Management in the Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus: Community Service of the USU Faculty of Nursing for the Health of PKK Cadres in Tadukan Raga Village

MEDAN, As part of an effort to increase awareness and knowledge about health in families, the USU Faculty of Nursing has carried out community service activities that focus on education about diabetes mellitus for PKK Cadres in Tadukan Raga Village, Sinembah Tanjung Muda Hilir, Deli Serdang Regency.

This activity was carried out on August 8, 2024, with the theme "Implementation of Comprehensive Learning in Self-Management Efforts to Prevent Diabetes Mellitus in Health Cadres"

"This Community Service is part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education at the University of North Sumatra".

The head of the activity is a Lecturer at the USU Faculty of Nursing Lufthiani, S.Kep, Ns, M.Kes stated that the theme carried out in this activity was an effort to train and increase the knowledge of PKK cadres, especially in families with diabetes mellitus.

This activity aims to provide a deep understanding to PKK cadres about Self-Management of preventing diabetes mellitus, a chronic disease that can be prevented and managed properly through healthy lifestyle management.

The programs implemented in this activity include:
Diabetes Mellitus Counseling: Mothers receive information about diabetes mellitus, risk factors, symptoms, and complications that can arise. This counseling also emphasizes the importance of early detection and independent disease management.

Introduction to Healthy Eating Patterns: Mothers are given education about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet to prevent and manage diabetes.

In this session, it is also explained about how to regulate sugar and carbohydrate intake, as well as the importance of consuming vegetables and fruits.
Physical Exercise for Diabetes Management: This activity also involves light exercise practices that can be done at home, as an effective way to keep blood sugar levels stable.

Free Blood Sugar Check: In this series of activities, free blood sugar check facilities are provided for mothers to find out their current health condition. The results of the examination are then explained by medical personnel, accompanied by suggestions and preventive measures that can be taken.

Village Head M. Dermawan, expressed his gratitude for the program that has been implemented.

"We understand more about diabetes mellitus and how to prevent it. This is very beneficial for the health of the community in Tadukan Raga Village and families," he said.
The materials carried were two about Introduction to Diabetes delivered by team member Dr. Siti Zahara Nasution, S.Kp, MNS and the second material about Self Management of Diabetes Mellitus prevention by Lufthiani, S.Kep, Ns, M.Kes, emphasizing the importance of this activity in efforts to improve public health, especially mothers as the main pillars in the family.

"With a better understanding of diabetes mellitus, we hope that mothers can implement a healthy lifestyle that is not only beneficial for themselves, but also for all family members," he said.
This community service activity is expected to raise awareness among the community and families about the importance of maintaining health, so that they can continue to play an active role in supporting the welfare of families and communities.
