MEDAN, Storytelling is one method to improve children's self-concept, so that children from an early age begin to learn to be more positive in viewing themselves (self-image), are able to feel how valuable they are (self-esteem) and are able to see what they should be like in their environment (ideal-self), through stories that they share with their teachers and friends or through stories shared by their teachers and friends.
This is the background for the Community Service Team (PKM) of the Faculty of Psychology and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences USU together with students to go down to the community to provide education about Story Telling, precisely at Bunga Tanjong Kindergarten, Tanjung Morawa District, Deliserdang Regency, on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
This community service activity is focused on providing counseling to parents and training for teachers in applying the storytelling method (the art of storytelling) in learning and practicing it directly with kindergarten students.
Ferry Novliadi, S. Psi, MSi, the head of the PKM Team in his presentation in front of parents and teachers said that building self-concept from an early age through storytelling is very important, by understanding themselves, children will know their potential and be able to direct themselves to achieve better life goals in the future.
This PKM activity was attended by 50 parents, all kindergarten students and all teachers.
In her speech, the Principal of Bunga Tanjong Kindergarten, Elvira, S.Pd AUD expressed her appreciation to the PKM Team, for choosing Bunga Tanjong Kindergarten as the location for community service.
"We are very happy and proud because out of the many kindergartens in Tanjung Morawa, our kindergarten was chosen as the location for community service which will definitely have extraordinary benefits for teachers, parents and all kindergarten students. Of course, "said Elvira.
The USU PKM Team consists of Dr. Emilia Ramadhani, S.Sos, M.A, Drs. Safrin, M.Si, Hafiza Adlina, S.AB, M.AB along with 3 (three) Psychology students were actively involved starting from the presentation of the material and sharing sessions with parents and teachers to the direct practice of the storytelling method for kindergarten students.
Each student was asked to draw whatever was on their mind.
Then this picture must be told in front of their friends. This was done alternately until all students had a turn.
The results of the PKM Team's observations, the children's drawing skills were very good, but they still had great difficulty in telling or choosing the right words to explain what was in their drawings.
For this reason, the PKM Team asked the school so that the habit of telling stories using pictures could be done every Friday where the learning material was not too dense.
"The hope is that children's ability to tell stories will increase and will automatically increase children's imagination, intelligence in language and also children's motor skills," said Ferry.
The community service activity went very conducively and ended with a group photo in the school yard in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
