USU Animal Husbandry Lecturer Helps Batu Village Farmers Optimize Land Utilization by Planting Indigofera

LANGKAT, - Empty land, be it a yard or land on the side of the road, can be used to plant green fodder, especially Indigofera. This aims to increase the amount of green fodder that can be used for ruminant livestock, be it cows, buffaloes, goats, or sheep.

This was conveyed by a Lecturer in the Animal Husbandry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utaraa (USU), Dr. Nevy Diana Hanafi, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM in a written statement received by Sumut Pos, Wednesday (24/7). According to Dr. Nevy Diana, Optimizing Land Utilization by Planting Indigofera to Increase the Amount of Green Fodder has been implemented when carrying out community service in Batu Malenggang Village, Hinai District, Langkat Regency on September 16, 2023.

The activity with the theme "Optimizing Land Utilization by Planting Indigofera to Increase the Amount of Green Fodder" was directly chaired by Dr. Nevy Diana Hanafi, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM with members Ir. Achmad Sadeli, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN.Eng, and Dr. Ir. Ma'ruf Tafsin, M.Sc., IPM. The activity was also attended by the Chairperson, Secretary, and members of the Berkat Tani Farmers Group and the Batu Malenggang Village community.

In her presentation, Dr. Nevy Diana Hanafi, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM conveyed that the utilization of empty land, both yards and land on the side of the road by planting green fodder, especially Indigofera, can increase the amount of green fodder that can be used for ruminant livestock, both cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep. Indigofera itself has advantages, namely high nutrient content, where it is rich in protein, fiber and minerals so that it can increase the nutrients of livestock feed.

In addition, Indigofera has good palatability or a good level of preference for livestock and Indigofera has tolerance to various environmental conditions so that it is easy to cultivate. So that the initial community problems, namely the difficulty of obtaining quality green fodder and the land not being optimally utilized, can be resolved with this activity.

On this occasion, the community service team also provided knowledge transfer in the form of materials that can be used for compost and also technology in the form of a composter machine equipped with a temperature sensor so that the quality of the compost produced can be optimal. In addition, on the same occasion the community service team also handed over 500 Indigofera seedlings to be planted around the community in Batu Malenggang Village.
