DELISERDANG, Goat's milk has a lower lactose content than cow's milk, so it can be consumed by people who are lactose intolerant.
Unfortunately, many people are less interested in consuming goat's milk. This is the main problem faced by goat milk farmers.
In response to this problem, lecturers from the USU Faculty of Agriculture conducted community service at the Millennial Farmer Goat Milk Production House, Bandar Setia Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, on June 22, 2024.
The community service with the theme "Innovation in Goat Milk Processing Technology into Ice Cream" was chaired by Ir. Achmad Sadeli, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN.Eng who is a Lecturer in the Animal Husbandry Study Program, USU Faculty of Agriculture, with members Dr. Nevy Diana Hanafi, S.Pt., M.Si and Dr. Ir. Ma'ruf Tafsin, M.Si,. IPM. This activity was attended by the Head of the Millennial Farmers Community, Roko Priono and members of the Millennial Farmers Community.
Ir. Achmad Sadeli, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN.Eng in his presentation said that the use of goat milk as ice cream can be used as an alternative processed product, so that the milk produced by the millennial farmer community which reaches 100 liters per day can be processed.
"In addition, goat milk has the advantage that the lactose content of the milk is lower than cow's milk, so it can be used by people who are lactose intolerant to consume it," explained Achmad Sadeli.
Moreover, said Achmad Sadeli, currently the main problem faced by goat milk farmers is the lack of public interest in consuming goat milk. So it is hoped that by processing it into ice cream, it can increase public interest in consuming goat milk.
"Where we know, ice cream is liked by all ages, because it has a delicious taste with a soft and fresh texture. In addition, the processing of milk into ice cream can also be varied by adding flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and so on," he said.
On that occasion, the community service team also transferred knowledge in the form of ingredients that can be used for ice cream and also ice cream making machines, so that the millennial farmer community can process ice cream faster and with guaranteed quality. The ice cream machine that was handed over can process 8 liters of milk in 15 minutes into ice cream.
