USU Community Service Team Empowers PKK Group of Suka Makmur Village in Managing Kitchen Waste
DELISERDANG, – Nucleus Guard, the Community Service Team of the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) conducted training and implementation of waste management technology and independent food security to 24 PKK representatives from each hamlet in Suka Makmur Village, Deliserdang. This activity involved 3 USU lecturers and 5 USU FKM students which was held at the Suka Makmur Village Hall.
The head of the service team, Winni RE Tumanggor S.K.M., M.P.H said that this activity was fully funded by the Directorate of Research, Technology and Community Service (DRTPM) 2024. "This service aims to empower the community, especially PKK mothers, regarding increasing knowledge and skills in realizing clean kitchens and nutritious kitchens in managing waste and nutritious food," said Winni accompanied by Ir. Indra Chahaya S. M.Si from the USU Faculty of Public Health and Nursa'adah S.ST., M.Agr from the USU Faculty of Agriculture.
In this series of community service activities, said Winni, the first activity carried out was the Clean Kitchen Training. The Clean Kitchen Training was held on Thursday, July 25, 2024, which was attended by 24 PKK members along with village officials and the head of the PKK TP at the Suka Makmur Village Hall, Deliserdang.
In this activity, the community service team provided education and training related to personal hygiene when cooking, kitchen environmental sanitation, safe cooking utensils, processing organic and inorganic kitchen waste using the 3R method, as well as waste with economic value such as inorganic waste and used cooking oil that can be sold to trusted collectors.
The delivery of the material was delivered by the community service team lecturers. Meanwhile, the delivery of the material on waste with economic value was delivered directly by the Director of the New Normal Main Waste Bank, Yasra Al-Fariza S.H. After this meeting, participants were asked to sort waste in their respective homes.
A week after the clean kitchen training activity, an activity to implement Compost technology with Composting Bags was also carried out at the Suka Makmur Village Hall on Thursday, August 1, 2024. This activity was accompanied by a team of lecturers and community service students and was attended by the Village Head, Village Secretary, and Head of the Suka Makmur Village PKK and 24 community service participants from each hamlet.
This activity went smoothly and was greeted with high enthusiasm from each participant. "Hopefully this activity can improve the skills of the community in utilizing organic waste into compost," said Winni.
Participants of the activity were given Composting Bag equipment and asked to make compost from the remaining organic waste produced from their respective homes. Mentoring, monitoring, and evaluation were carried out weekly through a WA group called Nucleus Guard Desa Suka Makmur which was created by the Community Service team.
Participants were asked to send photos or videos of waste processing activities that had been carried out in their respective homes. In addition, the community service team also provided assistance, monitoring, and evaluation directly to each participant's home on August 15, 2024.
The Head of Suka Makmur Village, Syahriel S.Sos said that with the community service of DRTPM, it is hoped that it will be able to overcome the waste problem in Suka Makmur Village. Syahriel also reminded each community service participant from PKK mothers to remain enthusiastic about attending the series of community service activities carried out at the Suka Makmur Village Hall.
