MEDAN - Lecturers from Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a Community Service (PKM) activity that focused on the arrangement of slum areas in Kampung Nelayan Seberang, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang Regency. This activity is part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which is funded by the NON PNBP grant program of Universitas Sumatera Utara for the 2024 Fiscal Year.

Led by Firman Eddy, ST, MT, together with a team of other lecturers, Wahyu Abdillah, ST, MT, and Ir. Novrial, M.Eng, this activity not only involves teaching and research, but also real actions that have a positive impact on the community. Interestingly, this program also involves architecture students from USU, who play an active role in the design process and field data collection. The presence of students brings enthusiasm and fresh ideas that are much needed in this project.

The arrangement of Kampung Nelayan Seberang aims to identify and reduce the level of slums in the area. Through in-depth analysis, the team found that many factors contributed to the slum conditions, including infrastructure problems, sanitation, and lack of green open spaces.

"Building conditions, neighborhood roads, drainage, and waste management are the main problems in this area. The direction of the arrangement is focused on improving infrastructure and providing Green Open Spaces (RTH)," said Firman Eddy.

In an effort to listen to the voices of the community, students also held interactive workshops with residents. In the session, they discussed various ideas for sustainable arrangement, and conducted surveys involving the local community.

This activity not only focused on the physical aspects, but also on community empowerment. The team provided training on waste management and the importance of a clean environment.

In his speech, Firman Eddy emphasized that the main target was to create a more livable environment and improve the quality of life of the people of Kampung Nelayan Seberang.

"We want the community to not only be objects, but also subjects in the process of improving their environment," he said.

Through this program, Universitas Sumatera Utara is committed to providing Planning Drawings, RAB, and initial consultation services for the community. This initiative is expected to produce a plan that does not give them the opportunity to understand real-world challenges in the field of architecture, which will shape them into professionals who are more prepared and sensitive to social issues in the future.

This arrangement is not only the first step for physical improvement, but also as a foundation for building a stronger, more educated, and more competitive community in the future.
