MEDAN. The Community Service Team of the University of North Sumatra (USU) provided assistance to nurses at the Haji General Hospital (RSU), Medan, in order to increase the capacity of nurses regarding autism.
The activity is in the form of collaboration between the Community Service Team of the University of North Sumatra and Southern Cross University, Australia and in partnership with the Haji General Hospital, Medan as the location of the activity.
The Community Service Team consists of Roxsana Devi Tumanggor, MNurs (MntlHlth), Ikhsanuddin Ahmad Harahap S.Kep., MNS., Dwi Karina Ariadni, S.Kep, Ns., M.Kep and Dina Rasmita, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep as a team from the USU Faculty of Nursing.
While USU's partner for this service is Prof. Andrew Cashin, Professor in the field of Autism and Intellectual Disabilities from the School of Health and Human Sciences, Southern Cross University, Australia.
The community service activity began with a Focus Group Discussion/FGD, with nurses from RSU Haji on July 30, 2024, at RSU Haji Medan and attended by 10 nurses.
The FGD was conducted to gather in-depth information about the care of people with autism. This is to find out the views and understanding of nurses about how autistic people should be treated in hospital services.
In addition to being assisted by students from the USU Faculty of Nursing, this activity was guided by Dina Rasmita, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep as the FGD facilitator.
As one of the Government Hospitals managed by the North Sumatra Provincial Government, the Haji Hospital has grown rapidly, with plans to add buildings and develop services to autism services.
Meanwhile, RSU Haji Medan is working on international accreditation and sharia accreditation, although it still accepts all patients regardless of religion. This hospital has also become a teaching hospital and is trusted to handle several priority national diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and stroke.
Therefore, the community service team became a partner in helping to realize this which was then continued with a seminar on autism on July 31, 2024 which took place at RSU Haji Medan, which was attended by 50 nurses.
The speakers in this activity were Dina Rasmita, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep, Dwi Karina Ariadni, S.Kep, Ns., M.Kep, and dr. Nurcahaya Sinaga Sp.A (N) and dr. Sarah Annisatul Mardhiyah, M.Ked (K.J), Sp. K.J as speakers from RSU Haji Medan.
This mentoring activity had previously been coordinated with RSU Haji Medan in the framework of coordination and partnership that had been established between the USU Faculty of Nursing and RSU Haji Medan since last year.
Thus, the results of the discussion between the teams then resulted in this activity which had been planned since June 2024.
"This activity is important to support and improve the knowledge of nurses in caring for people with autism in the future. Because the existing nursing care services are not yet optimal in responding to the needs of people with autism in clinical services at hospitals or communities such as health centers," said Roxsana Devi Tumanggor, who acted as the head of the Pengabdian activity team yesterday.
According to her, the assistance of nurses at RSU Haji Medan was carried out in order to improve the function of nurses and increase knowledge of disability conditions such as autism.
Thus, hospital services can adjust needs according to evidence-based services and patient-centered care, which will support hospital services in terms of quality.
