Belawan - The Community Service Team of Universitas Sumatera Utara (PKM USU) provided education on intra-oral radiography and periodontal tissue examinations through counseling and training on maintaining dental and oral health for children at Taman Siswa Belawan Junior High School, Belawan Bahagia Village, Medan City.
The activity was carried out with two visits, the first visit was promotion and training which was carried out on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, and the second visit was an evaluation which was carried out on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
In each visit, the activity was attended by the Head of the PKM Team, drg. Cek Dara Manja, Sp.RKG, Subsp.RDP (K), along with members drg. Rini Octavia Nasution, M.Kes., Sp.Perio., Subsp.RPID (K), drg. Dewi Kartika, MDSc, and drg. Maria Novita Helen Sitanggang, MDSc from the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) USU. In addition, it was also assisted by students from the USU FKG, namely Ummu Mahfuzzah Nur Salam, Bagas Rahmat Al Fitrah, Ardea Dwi Salsabila Nasution, Jihan Nadhira, and Fadhil Aswandi.
Also present were the Chairman of the Taman Siswa Association Foundation, Drs. Sofian Siregar, the Principal of Taman Siswa Belawan Middle School, Ahmad, S.Ag, S.Pd.I, along with teachers and teaching staff at Taman Siswa Belawan Middle School, Belawan Bahagia Village, Medan City.
The theme of the USU PKM activity is 'Improving Health and Knowledge Regarding Intra Oral Radiography and Periodontal Tissue Examination Through Counseling and Training on Dental and Oral Health Maintenance in Children at Taman Siswa Belawan Middle School'.
On the first visit, namely the promotion and training stage which was carried out on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the USU PKM Team installed a sink, provided snacks, souvenirs in the form of toothpaste and toothbrushes. The activities carried out on the first visit were to provide counseling, explain the importance of maintaining dental and oral health and hygiene and an introduction to intra-oral radiography examinations of dentistry and periodontal tissue through audiovisual media in the form of video screenings according to the language and images that children like.
The video is about 20 minutes long, contains the right time to brush your teeth, the right way to brush your teeth, dental diseases that can occur if teeth are not properly maintained, and how to examine intra-oral radiography and periodontal tissue.
Then, students of SMP Taman Siswa Belawan practiced directly how to brush their teeth correctly and properly at the sink provided using the toothbrush and toothpaste that had been provided.
"After the first visit, our team made a second visit, for evaluation. The evaluation activity was carried out by giving students of SMP Taman Siswa Belawan questions on the theme of maintaining dental hygiene, types of intra-oral radiography of dentistry and periodontal tissue. If the children can answer correctly, they will get useful prizes," said drg. Cek Dara Manja.
The USU PKM Team on this second visit also distributed snacks, souvenirs in the form of toothbrushes and toothpaste, questionnaires to teachers and teaching staff, as well as students of SMP Taman Siswa Belawan, and gave posters and plaques to partners.
The Principal of SMP Taman Siswa Belawan, Ahmad, S.Ag, S.Pd.I, said that the students of SMP Taman Siswa Belawan were very enthusiastic about the activities carried out and were grateful for the provision of washbasins and the implementation of this community service activity.
"The children were very enthusiastic and excited during the question and answer session and during this activity. We also thank the USU PKM Team for providing washbasins and conducting counseling activities at SMP Taman Siswa Belawan. We hope that by holding this counseling activity, it can increase students' knowledge and can maintain their dental and oral health," he added.
