Geese are considered a type of poultry with many advantages. Besides their large size, geese can also be farmed for multiple benefits. This was conveyed by Dr. Ir. Pindi Patana, S.Hut, M.Sc., while leading a community service team in a community outreach activity with PKK women in Simalingkar A Village, Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang, on Saturday (September 13th) at the Village Hall.
According to Pindi, there are two main reasons for focusing the activity in Simalingkar A Village. First, the University of North Sumatra (USU) Bekala Campus 2 is administratively located in the village, making it a priority to build partnerships with the surrounding community. Second, the village has natural resources that support agricultural development and food security programs. The outreach material was delivered by USU lecturers. Ir. R. Edhy Mirwandono, M.Si, MP, IPM, ASEAN Eng from the Faculty of Agriculture, explained goose farming techniques and their advantages. "Geese have loud calls, so they are often used as guard animals. They are relatively easy to raise because they can be fed both natural and artificial feed," he said.
Prof. Dr. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut, M.Si., from the Faculty of Forestry, emphasized the importance of utilizing household organic waste as feed. "This can reduce costs and reduce environmental problems. If women in the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) utilize vacant yards, raising geese can help the family economy and support food security," he explained.
Besides being consumed, goose farming also has the potential to become an agro-tourism attraction. Pindi mentioned that the land around the Bekala Campus is suitable as a demonstration plot for goose farming agro-tourism. "There is a depression that could be used as a goose pond. This program aligns with USU's green campus vision and sustainable development targets," he said. Lukman Hakim, S.Si., M.Si., from the Faculty of Vocational Studies, also emphasized the importance of livestock group institutions to ensure the sustainability of the partnership program.
This activity received appreciation from PKK cadres. The Head of the PKK in Simalingkar A Village, Sinta Veronika, assessed that this program aligns with the PKK's mission. "Many women here play a dual role in supporting their families' economic well-being. We are very grateful if this livestock village can be realized to support the community's food and economic needs," she said.
