The community service team from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra (FISIP USU), held an activity with fisherwomen members of the Indonesian Coastal Women's Union (KPPI) Medan in Bagan Deli, Medan Belawan District, Medan City, last Saturday (July 12th).
The community service activity, themed "Social Capital-Based Mentoring to Improve Women's Welfare in the KPPI (Indonesian Coastal Women's Union) Organization," discussed and provided crucial knowledge about women's strategic role in utilizing social capital to improve their well-being.
This activity aims to empower the community, particularly fisherwomen, by increasing cooperation, trust, and social solidarity, which are essential elements of social capital.
This community service activity involved various levels of society, including fisherwomen, village officials, and youth.
One of the main agenda items was a presentation on the importance of social capital in improving well-being. The fisherwomen were encouraged to improve harmonious social relations, foster cooperation between residents, and build mutual trust and mutual cooperation, which are core values of social capital.
According to the head of the community service team, Prof. Dr. Bengkel Ginting, M.Si., social capital plays a strategic role in improving the welfare of fisherwomen.
"Social capital is not just about individual relationships, but also involves trust and togetherness in achieving common goals. This is what we must build in Kampung Lalang," said Prof. Dr. Bengkel Ginting, M.Si.
Alwi Dahlan Ritonga, S.I.P., also contributed to the program. M.i.Pol also stated that social capital can resolve behavioral conflicts between individuals or groups that are hindered by other individuals/groups, so that their behavior can be aligned with others. Alwi also explained that social capital can be defined as the characteristics of social networks, norms, and trust that enable individuals to act effectively in achieving specific goals.
Furthermore, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Usu community service team stated that one of the reasons for choosing Bagan Deli Manis as the activity location was because it is the area with the largest population of female fisherfolk in the Medan Belawan sub-district.
The community service also included a hearing, which served as an opportunity for participants to share their opinions and provide solutions to the challenges they face, thereby eliminating any potential obstacles to their well-being.
