USU FKM Community Service Team Provides Rabies Prevention Education in the Nurcahaya Padang Bulan Medan Private School Environment

Medan. Lecturers of the Faculty of Public Health, University of North Sumatra (USU) held a community service activity for students of SMP Nurcahaya, Padang Bulan Medan. This activity took the theme 'Rabies Education for SMP Students for the Prevention of Rabies in the Community in the Nurcahaya Padang Bulan Medan Private School Environment'.

"This activity took place on July 23, 2024, with the aim of educating and increasing the knowledge and understanding of students of SMP Nurcahaya about the importance of preventing Rabies and avoiding the disease," said drh. Hiswani, M.Kes., as the Head of the Community Service Team. According to Hiswani, the target of this Community Service activity is students at the Nurcahaya Padang Bulan Medan Private SMP. Padang Bulan is an endemic area for rabies, therefore it is necessary to provide education about rabies to students who are students at the school.

In this community service activity, drh. Hiswani, M.Kes., as the team leader accompanied by fellow lecturers from the USU Faculty of Public Health, namely dr. Rahayu Lubis, M.Kes,. PhD., and Drs. Jemadi, M.Kes as team members. In addition, the team also involved a number of USU Faculty of Public Health students, namely Berlianda Ramadhanti, Ida Agave, Winni Alifah Tajung, Brigitha Audrey Hasibuan and Tabitha Novelitha. This activity was also supported by funding from Non-PNBP LPPM USU for the 2024 Fiscal Year.

In this activity, USU FKM lecturers and students majoring in epidemiology gave a pretest before providing the material. drh. Hiswani, M.Kes., provided education to students about the definition, history, signs and symptoms, transmission, vaccines, and prevention, as well as treatment for sufferers and animals that have suffered from rabies.

In his presentation, dr. Rahayu Lubis, M.Kes., Ph.D., said that the symptoms and signs of rabies in humans, generally sufferers feel feverish, lethargic, experience hydrophobia, fear of light or light and convulsions followed by paralysis and death.

Education was continued by Drs. Jemadi, M.Kes., who invited participants to share their knowledge or insights on how to prevent rabies. This activity also succeeded in contributing to Nurcahaya Middle School students to vaccinate their pets at the nearest veterinary clinic. Then, after all the materials were presented, the team again gave a post-test to see if they understood the knowledge about rabies.

This community service activity received a positive response from teachers and students at the Nurchaya Padang Bulan Medan Education Foundation. Hiswani explained that this service was carried out with the hope that it could bring changes related to knowledge about Rabies to students in the environment around the Nurcahaya Padang Bulan Medan Education Foundation. "It is hoped that this service can increase knowledge about Rabies, changes and awareness of behavior in preventing rabies in this school environment," he concluded.
