BINJAI, Lecturers from the University of North Sumatra (USU) carried out community service activities in Jati Utomo Village, North Binjai District, Binjai City, Monday (7/15/2024). This activity raised the theme "Making Boreholes and Pumping as an Effort to Improve Irrigation Sources for Food Land in Jati Utomo Village, North Binjai".

"This community service activity was initiated by a team from the Agricultural Engineering and Biosystems Study Program, USU Faculty of Agriculture," said Delima Lailan Sari Nasution S.TP, M.Sc, as the head of the community service team in a written statement received by Sumut Pos, Tuesday (8/13/2024).

In addition to Delima Lailan Sari Nasution, this community service activity also involved several lecturers, including Ainun Rohanah STP., M.Si, Raju STP., M.Si, Indra Saputra Kurniawan STP., M.T and several students, namely Putri Fathsya and Agia Frasetya Karokaro. In addition, this community service also involved the local community, especially the Jati Utomo Village Farmers Group.

Some of the activities carried out in this community service are making drilled wells and providing pumps and their equipment. This activity began with discussions, socialization, and installation and assistance in using pumping equipment on drilled wells given to the Jati Utomo Village Farmers Group to irrigate agricultural land.

Sadeli, a farmer and head of the Jati Utomo Village Farmers Group, stated that the provision of this pump was very helpful for them in irrigating the land. He said that so far, to irrigate 1 hectare of rice fields, they had to spend Rp5 million or around 200 thousand per rante.

"But with the large pump provided by the USU team, we only need IDR 2 million to IDR 2.5 million per hectare, and rice fields that previously could only be planted twice a year. But after making this drilled well, we can plant three times a year," he explained.

"That is one illustration of why when we first discussed this problem, we oriented pumping to what we needed," he added.

According to Delima, community service activities like this are very important in helping the community and are expected to continue and be replicated in other areas experiencing similar problems. "Participation and awareness of all parties are needed to support community service programs in the future," concluded Delima.
