USU Lecturer Educates Weavers to Use Natural Dyes

Medan - In order to improve and develop the potential of the surrounding environment into quality and high-value products, lecturers from the University of North Sumatra held community service by providing education and workshops on natural fabric dye making technology for weaving communities.

The service funded by the USU LPPM was carried out by involving IR & IR Kriya-Melayu of the Joint Business Group (KUB) Tenun Melayu, Bandar Khalipah Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, Friday (30/8).

The service was chaired by Dr. T. Ismanelly Hanum, S.Si., M.Si. Apt, with members Prof. Dr. apt. Poppy Anjelisa Z. Hasibuan, M.Si., and Dra. Nazliniwaty, M.Si., Apt, who are lecturers at the Faculty of Pharmacy in collaboration with USU Faculty of Forestry Lecturer Dr. Iwan Risnasari, S.Hut, M.Si, two USU Bachelor of Pharmacy students namely Annisa Aulia Rahma, Putri Nabiilah, alumni namely Wan Fadilla, S.Farm, Apt, students of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy Pharmacy Education Study Program, namely Ahmad Farids Wahab S.Farm, and two USU Master of Pharmacy students namely Yanti Yemima, S.Farm and Fauzul Husna, S.Farm.

Team Leader Dr. T. Ismanelly Hanum, S.Si., M.Si., Apt said that the community service aims to provide education and workshops on natural fabric dye manufacturing technology. As well as strategies that can be carried out to improve and develop the potential of the surrounding nature into quality and high-value products.

"Many things can be utilized including turmeric rhizomes, sawdust from merbau wood, onion skins, sappanwood, and others as substitutes for synthetic dyes," he explained.

In the community service, he continued, the lecturers assisted by students educated participants about the benefits and how to process raw materials of turmeric rhizomes and merbau wood so that they can be used as a preparation of yarn dye paste on cloth. "In addition, the community is also provided with marketing and business plan materials," he said.

Through the technology transfer carried out, he continued, there was a change in the way natural materials are processed for dyes so that natural dyes are produced that are more durable and stable, more practical in use. So that weavers can produce more color variants.

The community service team hopes that the weaving and yarn dyeing communities participating in this activity can produce songket cloth that uses natural dyes that are stable and easy to use. Furthermore, it is hoped that they can create songket cloth products with increasingly attractive and diverse color and motif creations so that they become products with high selling value.

The 2024 Environmental Benefit Scheme Community Service was carried out to improve cooperation between USU and the community. "This activity is also one of the Tridharma of Higher Education tasks that must be carried out by lecturers," added team member Prof. Dr. apt. Poppy Anjelisa Z. Hasibuan, M.Si, who is also the Vice Rector III of the University of North Sumatra.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the IR & IR Kriya Melayu Joint Business Group representing the Traditional Cloth Weavers Community, Irfania Ramadhani Lubis, S.Sn., expressed her gratitude to the USU community service team for the delivery of the technology provided and hoped to work together in the future.

"We feel grateful and thankful because we have been helped and cared for. We hope to be able to utilize more natural materials. Especially those that are not used such as leaves and fruit skins that can be made into dyes so that they can contribute to reducing waste," she said.
