DELISERDANG, Lecturers and Students from the University of North Sumatra (USU) held Community Service (PKM) by holding socialization and training on fish waste processing as an effort to increase added value and maximize the potential of fishery waste in Denai Sarang Burung Village, Pantai Labu District, Deliserdang Regency.
The community service which took place on May 15, 2024 and July 15, 2024 consisted of USU Animal Husbandry Lecturers, each chaired by Galih Ari Wirawan Siregar, S.Pt., M.Si, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yunilas, M.P and Dr. Ade Trisna, S.Pt., MM as well as from USU Water Management Lecturer Vindy Rilani Manurung, S.Pi., M.P.
The Head of the Community Service Team, Galih Ari Wirawan Siregar, S.Pt., M.Si, told Waspada, Friday (9/8) that this activity aims to convert fishery waste into animal feed that has high economic value and is environmentally friendly and supports 3 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were agreed upon in Paris in 2015. Where the 3 goals supported through bioeconomic activities are point 2 zero hunger, point 8 decent work and economic growth and point 13 handling climate change.
Galih explained that Denai Sarang Burung Village was chosen as the place for community service because its residents, the majority of whom work as fishermen, often face the problem of abundant and underutilized fish waste. In addition, farmers in the village also experience problems due to the high price of protein feed ingredients, namely fish meal, which results in high production costs.
"This is what causes the price of eggs and chicken meat to also increase. This fish waste, if not managed properly, can cause environmental pollution. Seeing this potential, the USU Community Service Team consisting of lecturers and students from various disciplines, including fisheries and animal husbandry, provided innovative solutions through intensive training," he said.
Galih said that in the two-day activity, training participants gained knowledge about fish waste processing techniques into animal feed that is rich in protein.
"The material presented includes an introduction to the types of fish waste, drying methods to efficient animal feed formulations.
In addition, said Galih, participants were also invited to practice directly in the processing process, starting from sorting fish waste, processing to drying fish waste. "To help the program run, the USU Community Service Team provided assistance in the form of an oven machine to the Denai Sarang Burung Village Community which will be used to process fish waste into fish meal," he said.
Galih also hopes that the activities that have been carried out by his party can provide sustainable benefits for the community. "We hope that with this training, the Denai Sarang Burung Village community can process fish waste into useful products, while increasing their income," he hoped.
Meanwhile, the Village Head (Kades) of Denai Sarang Burung, Katimin, SE admitted that this training was very helpful for the community in understanding how to manage waste properly and economically. "This is a big step for our village to be more independent and creative in managing existing resources," he said.
