USU Lecturers Conduct Legal Outreach in Nangka Binjai Village to Raise Awareness of a Healthy and Clean Environment

SOCIALIZATION: USU lecturers providing legal socialization in Nangka Village, Binjai City

Lecturers from the University of North Sumatra (USU) conducted a Community Service (PKM) activity on Legal Socialization to raise awareness of a clean and healthy environment among residents of Nangka Village, Binjai City.

The activity took place at the Nangka Village Office in Binjai City on Wednesday (July 23rd). The event was attended by Dr. Fajar Khaify Rizky, SH, MH, from the USU Faculty of Law (FH), along with members from the USU Faculty of Law: Prof. Dr. Suhaidi, SH, MH, Dr. Jelly Leviza, SH, MHum, and Siti Nurahmi Nasution, SH, MH, and Dr. Feby Yanti Harahap, MKed (PA), Sp.PA, from the USU Faculty of Medicine (FK). Students Sandrina Rachma Putri, Febby Juanita Lase, Johar Faridz Abdillah Siregar, Christopher Jack Delon Efendi, and Nurfatma Azzahra Isma, from the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia (USU), also participated in the event. Also in attendance were the Head of Nangka Village, M Mirza Mustaqimi, SH (Community Service Partner), village officials, and residents of Nangka Village, Binjai City.

The theme of the Community Service Program (PKM) related to health was 'Legal Socialization in an Effort to Increase Awareness of a Clean and Healthy Environment Among Residents of Nangka Village, Binjai City'.

The implementation phase of the event included event preparation with a briefing and participant registration, an opening by the MC and moderator, Siti Nurahmi Nasution, SH, MH, and remarks from the Head of Nangka, Binjai City, M. Mirza Mustaqimi, SH., and a welcome speech and presentation by the Head of the Community Service Program (PKM) Team, Dr. Fajar Khaify Rizky, SH, MH, on factors contributing to a lack of awareness of a clean and healthy environment, as well as efforts to increase awareness of a clean and healthy environment.

In addition, PKM members, Prof. Dr. Suhaidi, SH, MH, and Dr. Jelly Leviza, SH, MHum, presented material on legal aspects, particularly environmental law. Another PKM member, Dr. Feby Yanti, Hrp, MKed (PA), SP, PA, presented material on health aspects for residents of Nangka Village, Binjai City.

The Head of the PKM Team from the Faculty of Law (FH) USU, Dr. Fajar Khaify Rizky, SH, MH, stated that his team also held discussions and a question-and-answer session with residents of Nangka Village, Binjai City.

"We also distributed questionnaires, gave souvenirs to partners, took documentation or group photos, provided trash cans, and discussed further activities with the Nangka Village Head for the benefit of the residents of Nangka Village, Binjai City," Fajar told Sumut Pos in Medan.

He explained that legal regulations regarding awareness of a clean and healthy environment are regulated in Article 28H paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution, which stipulates that the government, as the policy-maker, guarantees its citizens a good and healthy environment and the right to receive health services. Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management, Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management, Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management, and related regional regulations.

"From a legal perspective, there is the concept of rights and obligations in environmental protection and management. This includes the right of every person to a good and healthy environment and the obligation to participate in environmental protection and management," he added.

Furthermore, Fajar continued, awareness and concern for environmental cleanliness are crucial for improving the quality of life and leading to a healthier lifestyle.

He hopes that through this activity, the Community Service Program (PKM) team will provide residents of Nangka Village with an understanding of the legal regulations regarding awareness of a clean and healthy environment, the factors contributing to a lack of awareness regarding a clean environment and its impact on health, and the ways to improve awareness of a clean and healthy environment.

"We also hope that, in particular, the Binjai City Government, the North Binjai District Government, and the Nangka Village Government will further enhance efforts to promote awareness of a clean and healthy environment by implementing a clean and healthy environmental program. This program will increase the participation of Nangka Village residents in maintaining environmental cleanliness by working together to clean up trash along roadsides, gutters, and waterways, providing proper waste disposal sites, implementing waste bank management in collaboration with community groups and private companies, and conducting fogging or fumigation in mosquito-infested areas," he concluded.
