USU Lecturers Hold Community Service and Training on Catfish Cultivation in Tarpaulin Ponds in Binjai

BINJAI | The Community Service Institute of the University of North Sumatra (LPPM-USU) together with the Purnama Ikan Farmers Group held a community empowerment activity through catfish cultivation in tarpaulin ponds in Jati Utomo Village, North Binjai District, Binjai City.

The technical guidance (Bimtek) activity was carried out on Friday (8/30/2024).

The training activity aims to provide skills to the Purnama Ikan farmer group. The material provided includes technical knowledge on how to cultivate catfish in tarpaulin ponds and how to make tarpaulin ponds. The training resource persons are experts from LPPM-USU.

One of the resource persons, Siti Khadijah Hidayati Nst, SP, MSi, presented material on strategies for developing catfish fisheries businesses and the challenges, obstacles and opportunities faced in catfish cultivation in tarpaulin ponds.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ir. Rahmanta, M.Si, presented the material on the methods or steps in making a round tarpaulin pond and the need for good water supply and quality for catfish fisheries in order to achieve efficient, effective and continuous farming.

Meanwhile, Dr. Eri Yusni, MSc, presented the material on catfish cultivation, including: how to characterize catfish so that they can be optimally cultivated, selection of seeds and how to spread seeds in ponds, pond maintenance by providing probiotics, waste disposal and how to harvest catfish according to market demand.

Meanwhile, Dr. Lindawati, SP, MSi, presented the material on the need to strengthen the institutionalization of fishery farmer groups in entrepreneurship in order to achieve efficient, effective and continuous farming.

As a partner of devotion, the head of the Purnama Ikan farmer group, namely Hermanto, expressed his gratitude to the team of lecturers for community service for providing counseling and assistance in catfish cultivation in tarpaulin ponds to the Purnama Ikan farmer group and the surrounding community.

“We would like to thank you for the attention given to us by the team of lecturers for community service at the University of North Sumatra. Hopefully this activity can provide benefits and change the way people think about increasing their income," said Hermanto.

At the end of the activity, the USU lecturer community service team provided a donation to the Purnama Ikan farmer group, namely a tarpaulin fish pond, catfish seeds, fish feed, a fish cage and a bucket as a form of optimizing the Purnama Ikan farmer group's business.

This donation is expected to motivate the people of Jati Utomo Village, especially the Purnama Ikan Farmer Group, to continue to develop productive businesses and activities that are useful and positive.

It is hoped that by participating in the extension and training activities for catfish cultivation in tarpaulin ponds, the recipient groups, the surrounding community and PKK cadres can improve their skills in cultivating catfish in tarpaulin ponds, so that in the future they can increase the income and welfare of the surrounding community.
