MEDAN. Lecturers from the University of North Sumatra (USU), conducted a socialization of the turtle egg incubator tool to a group of fishermen at the Nias Turtle House in Idanoi District, Gunung Sitoli on July 19-20.
In her statement, Thursday (8/21) the Head of the Community Service Lecturer Team, Vindy Rilani Manurung, S.Pi., M.P together with Astrid Fauzia Dewinta, S.STPi., M.Si, Syahira Addina, S.Pi., M.Si and Amanatul Fadhillah, S.Pi., M.Si, said that this socialization included designing a turtle egg hatching incubator tool, namely the "Smart Box Incubator" Turtle Egg Hatching.
According to Vindy Rilani, the purpose of making this tool is as a form of effort to increase turtle egg hatching to support turtle conservation, which is experiencing extinction status.
Where the egg hatching incubator works automatically equipped with incandescent lamps equipped with Hygrometer, Thermostat and Suction Fan.
Made of 8 mm Plywood, 2 x 1 inch wood, 2 x 2 inch, 5 mm and 3 mm clear Acrylic and Aluminum sheet. Incubator capacity 30 eggs. The hope of this tool is to have a high hatching success ratio of over 90% and can determine the sex of the hatchlings (baby turtles).
Another thing mentioned, the socialization and handover of the "Smart Box Incubator" tool for hatching turtle eggs was carried out thanks to the collaboration and support of the devotion Partner Mr. Yafaowoolo Gea as the supervisor of the Nias Turtle House, Fishermen's Group and Students of the Aquatic Resources Management Study Program who attended the socialization activity.
Furthermore, this turtle incubator is still in the evaluation stage, it will later be patented and can be increased in number.
"We hope that the people of Nias can protect and care about the survival of turtles in our waters. Turtles are rare animals whose existence is currently threatened due to high exploitation of fishing and consumption in the Nias Islands. Hopefully, with this incubator, it can increase the hatching of turtle eggs and the graduation of turtles," he concluded.
