MEDAN, The Community Service Institute Team of the University of North Sumatra (LPM USU) provided training on making a candlenut sheller machine in Sembahe Village, Sibolangit District, Deli Serdang, Tuesday (23/7).
This sheller machine is used to separate the candlenut fruit from its shell.
It is known that Sembahe Village, located in Sibolangit District, Deli Serdang Regency, is one of the villages known for its candlenut agricultural products.
Candlenut (Aleurites moluccana) has a high economic value and plays an important role in increasing the income of village communities. However, the process of separating candlenut fruit from its shell is still carried out traditionally, which requires considerable energy and time.
Therefore, the Community Service Institute Team of the University of North Sumatra (LPM USU) provided training on making a candlenut sheller machine as a technological innovation that is an urgent solution to overcome this obstacle.
The community service activity was chaired by Prof. Dr. Timbangen Sembiring M.Sc and accompanied by Ir. Muhammadin Hamid, S.Si., M.Si and Herty Afrina Sianturi, S.Si., M.Si and also involved 6 students, namely, M Zidan Davy, Devi Yolanda Simangunsong, Maria Derani Ester Vania Situngkir, Ayu Wahyuni Batubara, Eva Purwanti, and Martinez Lumbantobing.
According to Prof. Dr. Timbangen Sembiring M.Sc, the activity aims to provide knowledge about machine technology to increase productivity and efficiency of candlenut separation.
"Through this activity, it is hoped that the candlenut sheller group can reduce the manual workload and produce candlenuts with better quantities and shapes," he said.
He continued, this community service activity is fully supported and funded by the Community Service Institute of the University of North Sumatra (LPM USU) and will be held 4 times with the topics: socialization of proper candlenut drying, provision and introduction of candlenut sheller machines, how to use candlenut sheller machines, how to maintain candlenut sheller machines.
It was stated that, overall, the use of machine technology in separating candlenuts from their shells in Sembahe Village is a significant step forward in the modernization of the agricultural sector in the village.
This initiative shows how collaboration between academic institutions and the community can produce practical solutions and have a positive impact on the welfare of farmers.
"Continued support from the government and related institutions is very important to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the benefits of this program to other areas that have similar potential," he concluded.
