MEDAN - The Community Service Team (PKM) of the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU) provided assistance in the form of a brick-making machine to the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group (Koptan), in Huta VI Sibatu-batu Nagori Bandar Tinggi, Bandar Masilam District, Simalungun Regency, on Saturday (7/9).
The PKM Team was chaired by Fadly A Kurniawan Nst ST MT, along with members Ade Irwan ST MT, Andianto Pintoro ST MT, and Maraghi Muttaqien ST MT. Meanwhile, the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group was attended by 12 people.
"Farmers' groups are one of the forums for village communities to improve the skills and welfare of village communities. Like the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group, in addition to overseeing the Etawa goat farming business, they also oversee the brick-making business, as an alternative material to replace bricks in making buildings," said Fadly to Sumut Pos in Medan, Saturday (14/9).
So far, said Fadly, the making of bricks carried out by one of the Brick Entrepreneurs in the village, namely Mhd Nur Tanjung, is still done manually, without using auxiliary equipment or appropriate technology machines.
"Therefore, as one form of Tridharma lecturers, which aims to provide knowledge related to technology from campus to the community, we are implementing PKM, by trying to provide Appropriate Technology (TTG) tools to our partners, namely the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group in the form of brick molding tools. So that it is expected to increase productivity and welfare for residents who work in the farmer group," he said.
Fadly explained, initially, brick production without using machines only got 150 bricks per day with 3 workers.
Meanwhile, he continued, manually, 1 sack of cement can produce 60-70 bricks. Meanwhile, by using this molding machine, it is hoped that the brick production capacity can be 1,000-1,500 bricks per day.
"By providing this brick printing machine, partners feel that their work will be lighter and brick production can increase significantly. So that the welfare of the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group will be even better in the future," he said.
Meanwhile, a Brick Entrepreneur, in Huta VI Sibatu-batu Nagori Bandar Tinggi, Bandar Masilam District, Simalungun Regency, Mhd Nur Tanjung appreciated the USU FT Mechanical Engineering PKM Team who had provided assistance to the Semangat Jaya Farmers Group, in the form of a brick printing machine.
"Our farmer group feels happy and increasingly motivated because the work they do is getting lighter and the results of their brick printing have increased significantly," he said.
