MEDAN, The Community Service Team of the University of North Sumatra (PKM USU) provided legal education on the importance of medical waste management, at the HAH Hasan Health Center, Payaroba Village, Binjai City, on Thursday (20/6).
The event was attended by the Head of the PKM Team, from the USU Faculty of Law, Dr. Fajar Khaify Rizky SH MH along with members, from the USU Faculty of Medicine (FK), dr. Feby Yanti Harahap MKed (PA) Sp PA, and from the USU FH D Shahreiza SH MH. In addition, it was also assisted by students, namely Muhammad Dafa Rifaldi, Egi Namira Barus, Johar Faridz Abdillah Siregar, Tasya Atiqah Lubis, and Sandrina Rachma Putri, who came from the USU FH.
Also present were the Head of Payaroba Village, Mohammad Safwan Siddin SSTP, Head of HAH Hasan Health Center, dr. Muhammad Iqbal MKM, Staff of the Environment and Forestry Service of the North Sumatra Provincial Government, Himawan Sutanto SKM MAP, as well as medical and non-medical staff of HAH Hasan Health Center, Payaroba Village, Binjai City.
The theme of the PKM related to health is 'Legal Education on the Importance of Medical Waste Management at HAH Hasan Health Center, Payaroba Village, Binjai City'.
"The implementation stage of the activity includes providing an explanation or education in terms of legal aspects, especially environmental law and health law, related to regulations governing medical waste management, proper and correct medical waste management, and the impact of medical waste on health and the environment for medical and non-medical staff at HAH Hasan Health Center, Payaroba Village, Binjai City," said Fajar, Friday (5/7).
Then, Fajar continued, his party also carried out discussion activities and Q&A with medical and non-medical staff at the HAH Hasan Health Center. "We also distributed questionnaires, gave souvenirs to partners, documentation or group photos and discussed to provide information and assistance, related to medical waste management to the Village Government, medical and non-medical staff at the Health Center," he said.
He explained that the regulation for medical waste management is regulated in Article 59 Paragraph (1) of Law (UU) Number 32 of 2009, concerning Environmental Protection and Management, Law Number 6 of 2023, concerning Job Creation, Government Regulation (PP) Number 101 of 2014, concerning Management of Hazardous and Toxic Waste, Permenkes Number 27 of 2017, concerning Guidelines for Prevention and Control of Infection in Health Facilities.
Furthermore, Fajar added, PP Number 27 of 2017, concerning Health Facilities, Article 11 paragraph (1) of Law Number 44 of 2009, concerning Hospitals, PermenLHK Number P56 of 2015, concerning Procedures and Technical Requirements for the Management of B3 Waste from Health Facilities, Permenkes Number 7 of 2019, concerning Hospital Environmental Health, and PMK Number 75 of 2014, concerning Health Centers.
"Medical waste management is carried out by means of reduction, temporary storage, collection, transportation, utilization and processing, including the disposal of medical waste. Types of medical waste, namely solid waste, liquid waste, non-medical waste and non-medical liquid waste," he explained.
He said, the impact of this Health Center medical waste, if not managed properly, can have an impact on human health disorders, genetic and reproductive disorders, cause cross-infection, damage to property, disturbance or damage to plants and animals. "In addition, it also causes economic losses, environmental pollution, disturbances to comfort and aesthetics," he added.
He hopes that from the results of this activity, the PKM team can provide education to medical and non-medical staff of the HAH Hasan Health Center in the legal aspects of medical waste management.
According to Fajar, proper and correct medical waste management is in accordance with applicable regulations and prevents the impact of environmental and health pollution, both in the Health Center environment and the community outside the Health Center, due to medical waste.
"We also hope, especially the Binjai City Government, to follow up and help with the problems faced by the HAH Hasan Health Center, related to the repair and construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) for liquid waste and solid waste storage," he concluded.
