MEDAN, University of North Sumatra (USU) through the Community Service Activity of the Environmental Benefit Program, provided a sieving machine, packaging machine, and several other tools to the community members of Erna's Ecofarm, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, Saturday (3/8). The activity is an effort to increase compost production and improve the community's economy.

The USU Community Service Team that participated included Dr. Nelly Anna, S.Hut., M.Sc., Dr. Evalina Herawati, S.Hut., M.Sc., Novita Anggraini, S.Hut., M.Sc, Ahmad Baiquni Rangkuti, S.Hut., M.Sc, and 6 active students of the USU Faculty of Forestry.

"The main purpose of compost production at Erna's Ecofarm is to reduce household waste in the village environment," said the Head of the Community Service Team, Dr. Nelly Anna, S.Hut., M.Sc, to waspada, Wednesday (7/8).

The Community Service activity began with a survey of the feasibility of the location and resources three months before the handover of the sieving machine and packaging machine. The handover ceremony began with an opening by the Head of Community Service Dr. Nelly Anna, S.Hut, M.Si, a speech by the Head of the Ecofarm Group Mrs. Erna, a demonstration of the use of tools, socialization and discussion about the importance of compost fertilizer, and harvesting organic agricultural products.

Nelly explained that the activity was used as an alternative for village communities to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and factory-made fertilizers that were often used, and as a source of income. Because with this assistance, it is hoped that the production scale will be sufficient to be commercialized.

It is known that Erna's Eco Farm is a village community group organization that aims to increase family income by utilizing and processing household waste, producing vegetables and fruits, and also providing training and education for visitors who come around the village.

Furthermore, Dr. Nelly Anna, S.Hut., M.Si. explained that compost is a type of fertilizer that can be made by utilizing recycled household waste. Compost is very useful for fertilizing the soil.

"Compost works to improve soil structure, as well as increase the ability to maintain water content in the soil. Compost can also increase microbial activity in the soil, so that plants can easily absorb nutrients contained in the soil," he said.
