Langkat - USU lecturers conducted community service activities related to disaster mitigation and the implementation of hospitality for the community and tourism actors in the Bukit Lawang tourist area, Friday (23/8). The lecturers are Gustanto and Koko Sujatmoko.

This activity is a form of responsibility of universities and lecturers in providing understanding to village communities as a real form of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

Gustanto as the head of the community service activity said that understanding disaster mitigation and the implementation of hospitality for tourism actors in Bukit Lawang is very important in managing tourism considering that Bukit Lawang is a tourist area located in a forest area.

"Bukit Lawang is located around the forest where there is also a river so it is very necessary for the community and tourism actors to understand disaster management," said Gustanto.

Gustanto reminded that the potential for disasters could occur suddenly without being detected. Therefore, anticipatory efforts are important in order to minimize the consequences that will arise.

Gustanto appealed to the community and tourism actors along with the government to work together to provide disaster preparedness attributes and equipment such as making evacuation route signposts and evacuation equipment needed when a disaster occurs.

"The presence of evacuation route signposts can also increase the attraction for visitors because visitors will feel safe when carrying out tourism activities," he explained.

"This is also related to increasing hospitality from tourism actors in Bukit Lawang," he continued.

This activity received appreciation and a good response from the community and Bukit Lawang tourism actors. With this activity, the community feels helped and feels cared for in developing tourism potential in Bukit Lawang.

"We are happy and grateful to USU for giving us attention and input in managing tourism in our place," said Rudianto as a tour guide in Bukit Lawang.
