Medan, (Analisa). Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, Sp.OG stated that the Community Empowerment Learning Community Service Lecture (KKN-PPM) is still an elective course with the condition that it can only be followed by students who have passed 100 credits.
Vice-Rector II conveyed this when opening the KKN-PPM socialization on Friday (17/2) at the Student Center, Gate I, USU Campus, Medan. Present at the event were the Head of LPPM USU, represented by the Secretary of LPPM, Prof. Dra. Irnawati Marsaulina, M.S., and two speakers, Dr. Budi Utomo, S.P., M.P., and dr. Surya Dharma, M.P.H.
According to him, in his speech in front of hundreds of prospective KKN-PPM students, basically, KKN is not something new for USU because USU has implemented it since 1972-1999. Then, for some reason, KKN was stopped along with the termination of KKN in other universities in Indonesia in 1999.
This year's KKN is entering its third year of implementation, which is in line with the appeal of DIKTI for all universities to run KKN courses. "Considering the importance of the KKN program for students, universities, and the community, USU is again holding the first KKN activity in 2015, and it is hoped that it can become a compulsory course for all USU students," he said.
In accordance with the concept being implemented, KKN has now changed its name to KKN-PPM. This concept is an improvement on the previous KKN concept, which was more top-down-oriented and focused on student service only. KKN-PPM is directed at bottom-up-oriented activities, namely, students and the community trying to make changes or improvements.
In addition to studying, students also carry out learning and community empowerment to jointly build villages. For three years, these villages will receive visits from KKN-PPM students. It is hoped that the fostered villages will change for the better afterward.
Program design
Meanwhile, the Secretary of LPPM USU, Prof. Dr. Dra. Irnawati Marsaulina, M.S., in her report, said in 2017, the KKN-PPM program plan will be implemented in three activity programs, namely regular KKN-PPM in Karo, Simalungun, North Labuhanbatu, Langkat, and Tanjungbalai City. Then, the National KKN will be implemented in Gorontalo City with Gorontalo State University (UNG) as the host. Finally, the Outer Island KKN is planned to be implemented in North Nias.
"Previously, in 2016, USU implemented Regular KKN in Karo, Simalungun, and Samosir. Meanwhile, Thematic KKN was implemented in Tanjungbalai City. For the Outer Island KKN, KKN was implemented in North Nias, North Sumatra, and Simeulue Island, Aceh Province. For the National KKN, it was implemented in Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands," she said.
