Lion's Mane Mushrooms Are Worth Cultivating in Medan City
MEDAN | Lion's mane mushroom, also known as lion's mane, is feasible and promising if developed in Indonesia, especially in Medan City.
Considering that lion's mane mushrooms generally grow in habitats with fairly high air humidity, namely 85% to 90%. Where the incubation temperature suitable for mycelia growth is 25°C - 26°C.
In addition, lion's mane mushrooms have the ability to increase nerve growth and memory, contain bioactive compounds such as hericerins, steroids, alkaloids, and lactones that have neurotropic effects on brain cells that can have a positive impact on increasing memory and improving memory.
Even the polysaccharides contained in lion's mane mushrooms are beneficial for cardiovascular health and increase body immunity.
Departing from that, the Community Service (Abdimas) team of the University of North Sumatra (USU) held a socialization of lion's mane mushroom cultivation and how to overcome its problems to a number of mushroom farmers in Medan City.
On this occasion, the Abdimas Team also provided socialization in the form of science and technology (Iptek), appropriate tools to increase production and modification of mushroom growth rooms.
Head of the USU Abdimas Team Liana Dwi Sri Hastuti, M.Si, Ph.D said that so far, lion's mane mushrooms or Hericium erinaceus are known to grow well in the wild throughout the summer in North America, Europe, and Asia.
"This is certainly a challenge in mushroom cultivation, especially in Indonesia, especially in Medan City which has a high average temperature," said Liana Dwi Sri Hastuti, M.Si, Ph.D who is also a lecturer at the USU FMIPA.
It is explained that lion's mane mushrooms were first cultivated in China in 1988 in baglogs containing sawdust. However, the cultivation cycle is long and the yield is low.
"This can be overcome by manipulating the environment where it grows when cultivated and regulating the right nutrition in the baglog," he said.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Erman Munir, M. Sc said that Source: optimizing the composition of the cultivation media to obtain high yields from Hericium erinaceus mycelial biomass can be triggered by increasing certain compounds that it needs.
"Ready-to-use organic materials such as bran that are commonly used by farmers, may be modified by adding the right composition of corn flour, rice flour or bread flour," he explained.
Meanwhile, a mushroom farmer from Medan City, Ir. Hartopo said that lion's mane mushrooms are one of the edible mushrooms that have a delicious taste like crab and have extraordinary benefits for health and have high and promising economic prospects if cultivated in Indonesia.
