DELI SERDANG - Academics from the University of North Sumatra (USU) carried out a community service program in Paya Itik Village, Galang District, Deli Serdang Regency, starting from June 7 to November 30, 2024.

This activity was led by Dra. Junita Setiana Ginting, M.Sc., as the Head of the Community Service Team, which was attended by two Team Members, namely Drs. Edi Sumarno., M.Hum. and Sapna Sitepu, S.Pd. M.Sn., as well as three Enumerators, namely Sabrina Oktavilyana, Rizqi Putra Permono, and Muhammad Shalihul Amri.

In her statement to reporters, the Head of the USU Community Service Team, Dra. Junita Setiap Ginting, M.Sc., said that this activity was part of USU's commitment to realizing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education as a form of academic contribution to society.

Specifically, she said that the community service program in Paya Itik Village was carried out with the aim of strengthening attitudes of tolerance and harmony among the younger generation.

"This activity takes a unique approach, because it involves village youth in arts and cultural skills training," said Junita, Monday (02/09/2024).

During the three months of this community service program, she admitted, the village youth were given various arts training, ranging from dance, vocal arts or singing, to the art of using traditional musical instruments.

In addition, the village youth were also provided with sports facilities in the form of volleyball, costumes, and nets. They were even facilitated to take part in a friendly match with youth from Pertumbukan Village.

"We see that the younger generation seems enthusiastic about participating in every session given. Even by holding this friendly match, of course it will inspire their enthusiasm to create achievements," she explained.

Interestingly, continued Junita, this activity received extraordinary appreciation, both from the village government and the community. The Paya Itik Village community even hopes that the community service program can continue and become a routine agenda for USU in an effort to foster a tolerant, creative and cultured young generation.

As an effort to build village identity, according to her, the USU Community Service Team also created the Paya Itik Village Mars. This song was also sung together by government officials, PKK administrators, and community leaders of Paya Itik Village.

"Through this arts and culture skills activity, it is hoped that the younger generation will be able to continue the attitude of harmony and tolerance that has been carried out by the previous generation. Because by understanding and knowing cultural identity, we can strengthen the relationship between the three tribes in Paya Itik Village, namely Banjar, Java, and Karo," explained Junita.
