TADUKAN RAGA,- Lecturers and students of the Faculty of Engineering, University of North Sumatra (USU) carried out community service with an economic and social scheme through the Community Service and Service Institute of the University of North Sumatra (LPPM-USU). This activity was carried out in Tadukan Raga Village, STM Hilir District, Deliserdang, Thursday (4/7).
This service was chaired by Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Irvan, M.Sc. with members Prof. Ir. Indra Surya, M.Sc., Ph.D, Mersi Suriani Sinaga, S.T., M.T, and Dr. Ir. Fatimah, M.T, assisted by three undergraduate students of the USU Faculty of Engineering, namely Johannes Siregar, Handerson Simanjuntak, and Vandria Alamsyah.
In the community service entitled "Empowering Local Communities Around Palm Oil Mills Through Integration of Palm Oil Liquid Waste and Empty Fruit Bunches Processing in Household-Scale Biogas Production and Straw Mushroom Cultivation in Tadukan Raga Village, STM Hilir District, Deliserdang Regency", the lecturers and students provided counseling on how the combination of palm oil liquid waste and cow dung found in abundance in the surrounding area can be used as biogas that can be used for household needs and directly demonstrated to local residents using a biogas stove. They also provided counseling related to straw mushroom cultivation.
"Palm oil liquid waste and cow dung, which are usually seen as waste, can be used as biogas producers that can be used by local residents. This activity is not only to reduce waste, but is also expected to provide education to local residents regarding the use of this waste as an environmentally friendly energy producer," said the head of the community service team, Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Irvan in a press release received by SumutPos.co, Thursday (22/8/2024).
Prof. Irvan hopes that the newly held community service activity can provide new insights in efforts to develop alternative energy.
The event was opened with a comprehensive presentation of material, providing insight into the potential of waste that can be used for the needs of residents. After the presentation of the material, the event continued with a demonstration of the use of the results of the biogas itself which invited enthusiasm from the local community.
"Local residents were very enthusiastic in participating in the demonstration demonstrated by the students of the engineering faculty. The community service members also invited local residents to participate in using the biogas stove," said Prof. Irwan.
"In addition to providing counseling on the empowerment of palm oil liquid waste and cow dung that can be used as biogas, we also provide counseling on the empowerment of straw mushroom cultivation which is expected to help the economy of local residents," added Prof. Irvan.
This activity was welcomed by the local head of the environment. "As the head of the environment here, I see that our residents are very enthusiastic about the arrival of lecturers and students of the USU Faculty of Engineering in carrying out their community service," he said.
He also hopes that the activities carried out can provide new insights to local residents, considering that technology like this is still rarely used in their environment. "We have high hopes that with this service, it can improve the economy of local residents and the knowledge of residents about waste utilization," he said.
This program is also considered right on target, considering the many raw materials in the area. With the counseling carried out by the USU team, it is hoped that residents can process palm oil liquid waste and cow dung into products that can be used and public knowledge about straw mushroom cultivation can help the local economy while reducing waste that has not been utilized so far.
